TAYLOR COUNTY Homes smoke Fire departments, organizations work together for safety giveaway BY HARRY FRANKLIN State Editor Half of Taylor County's more than 3,200 houses probably don't have working smoke alarms. That's about to change. Thanks to a collaboration between a utility cooperative, the county's eight volunteer fire departments and the Taylor County chapter of the Kids Yule Love organization, every house without a working smoke alarm can have one alarm installed for free, Hayley Greene, a Flint Energies spokeswoman, said Thursday.

Flint Energies, an electric membership cooperative headquartered in Reynolds, is making a corporate donation estimated at $6,400 to buy the $3.90 smoke alarms through a state vendor. Kids Yule Love is an organization devoted to assisting children. It was founded by Bibb County Commissioner to get alarms be 21, be 4 Joe Allen, a 30-year veteran of the Bibb County Fire Department, said Greene. The group will distribute fliers at schools, grocery stores and through organizations announcing how residents can get on the list to receive a smoke alarm. Greene said the smoke alarms have been ordered, and the first shipment i is expected about the second week in May.

Kids Yule Love also will help train volunteers to accompany firefighters at the installations and share with residents the importance of changing batteries and checking smoke alarms, as well as preparing a plan of escape for the family. "This is a one-of-a-kind program," said State Fire Marshal Alan Shuman. "We had 128 fire deaths in Georgia last year, and 85 percent of those could have been prevented if there had been a working smoke alarm in the home. They give you a 50 percent chance of escape." According to the National Fire Data Center, children under age 5 are at greatest risk of death during a house fire. Children under age 10 account for 22.2 percent of all fire deaths.
